In the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the trickster god Q returned to once more play havoc with Picard and the crew of the Enterprise. When Picard refuses his request to join the crew, Q spitefully throws the Enterprise into the Delta Quadrant to demonstrate how unprepared Starfleet is for "what's coming".
What's coming, is the Borg, whom the Enterprise crew make first contact with, with disastrous results. Unable to communicate and reach an accord with the cybernetic race, the Enterprise is thrown into their first battle with the Borg, losing some crew members in the process. Picard eventually pleads with Q to help them, acknowledging his fears.
Did the Enterprise fail Q's test? It seems likely, now that the Borg want to join the Federation and Picard has a second chance to make things right.
