10 Star Trek TV Shows And Movies Currently In The Works

5. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Captain Pike
CBS Media Ventures / Paramount Pictures

One of the most anticipated of the new shows, Strange New Worlds will follow on from Discovery's second season finale. Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck will all return as Pike, Number One and Spock respectively. Production on this series was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, though this allowed the writers to complete the scripts for the series before filming begins.

Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin are executive producers on the show. They have confirmed that it will be episodic, rather than the heavy serialization of Discovery and Picard. It will also skew toward a more hopeful, optimistic feeling. For the design of the show, they confirmed that elements of the sixties aesthetic will be kept, while they continue to modernize the Enterprise.

There is room for seven years of storytelling, from the battle with Control to Pike's eventual accident. CBS is developing a video wall, based on the technology used on The Mandalorian, to allow the actors and filmmakers to see the digital environments in real time while filming. This same technology is being used for Discovery.

Production is due to begin in February 2021 and run until July, though no premiere date has been announced. Jeff Russo, composer for Discovery and Picard, held talks with Kurtzman to score this show as well, though as of writing this article is it not confirmed that he will return.
