1. Not Going Out
So I dont have a massive beef with the pilot episode of Not Going Out, to be honest, the humour has remained pretty consistent over the series as a whole. My beef is with Kate, played by Megan Dodds. Shes not great. Shes not very smooth with the whole comedic banter thing. Its quite alarming how much Lee, played by Lee Mack funnily enough, needs to carry every conversation. The pilot episode is much stronger when shes not actually involved. Dodds is very wooden, and she doesnt come across as a natural. She even gets outdone by irrelevant supporting characters and nobody extras. Luckily, shes only part of the series for one season, and then she disappears and life can go on. In fact, my main complaint with this pilot is how much time they dedicate to Dodds. Nobody is given a reason to care about her. She just floats around, being used mostly as a spare part for Mack and Vine to stretch out their comedic muscles. Vines chemistry with Mack is more authentic and realistic. Dodds fails in comparison, and it would be hard to imagine the show would be the success it is today with her still in tow.
