10 Terrible TV Pilots That Led To Otherwise Great Shows

5. Friday Night Dinner

After watching Simon Bird in The Inbetweeners, I was rather excited for Friday Night Dinner... But the first episode was horrible. The humour is offensively in your face. There€™s nothing subtle or clever about it. I understand that it€™s a comedy about a supposedly normal family, but by repeating almost every joke over and over, it becomes a bit of a chore to watch. The €˜show stealing€™ supporting character, as is the trend usually, comes off as incredibly one dimensional and you€™d rather he run off screen as quickly as he comes on. But the show does improve. They do stick to the same kinds of jokes, such as the childish pranks between the two brothers, and Paul Ritter€™s insistence to walk around half naked and talk about 'females', but the writers manage to find something humorous in their rather mundane lives. The first episode tries too hard to be funny, and the ironic thing is that it gets funnier once it seems to stop trying... although it still does irritate me that the family continually wonder who is at the door, when it's blatantly clear Jim is probably their only visitor.
