Game of Thrones had a definitive ending, but there were still plenty of open questions for fans of the show wanting answers to the show’s deeper mysteries. House of the Dragon provides the opportunity to give greater depth to the original series by providing additional historical background and further exploring themes introduced in Game of Thrones.

Despite taking place centuries before the main action of Game of Thrones there are quite a few parallels to the original series. In both series, the heart of the conflict centres around the quest for the Iron Throne and a female contender’s quest for power. Exploring Alicent’s and Rhaenyra’s journeys will add greater perspectives to similar choices made by women such as Sansa, Cersei, and Daenerys in Game of Thrones.

We will also have the opportunity to dive deeper into what makes the great houses featured in Game of Thrones so unique. In addition to the Targaryens, the show will also provide the opportunity to see historical members of House Lannister, as twins Jason Lannister, the Lord of Casterly Rock, and his identical twin Tyland Lannister, a cunning politician, have been cast for the series.

The Valyrian steel dagger wielded by Alicent Hightower in the teaser trailer appears to be the same dagger used in the attempt to assassinate Bran Stark and the same dagger used by Arya Stark to kill the Night King. There could be deeper reason why the same weapon appears at such key points in Westeros’ history, tying House of the Dragon to Game of Thrones in a much larger overarching epic.
