The Targaryens are unique among the noble houses in Westeros. As a family of dragonlords hailing from Old Valyria, the Targaryens are known to have practices and customs that foreign or even abhorrent to other houses of the Seven Kingdoms. House of the Dragon will further explore just how different the Targaryens are.

As illustrated by Daenerys Targaryen and Jon “Aegon Targaryen” Snow in Game of Thrones, those with blood of the dragon are often dragonriders. However, Targaryens also often have the ability to have premonition-like dreams. These dragon dreams were unexplored in the original series, as Daenerys did not exhibit this ability in the show like she did in the novels. However, this unique ability could be further explored in House of the Dragon.

When telling the saga of the Dance of the Dragons, the concept of dragonseeds will also be explored. During the war, Rhaenyra’s faction needed more dragonriders for their dragons and offered wealth and knighthood to those who could claim a dragon. Many people were injured or died in the process of trying to claim a dragon, but four new dragonriders were successful, adding fuel to the theory that blood of the dragon, or at least some Valyrian heritage, is a requirement for becoming a dragonrider.

Targaryens are also noted for their potential for either madness or greatness. Just like the flip of a coin, some of the Targaryens in the new series are sure to be great, others will be mad, but all are sure to be compelling.
