Just as the Autobots were never solely heroic characters, so too are the Decepticons more than just evil antagonists, and the proof lies with the most famous Decepticon of them all: Megatron.

Originally portrayed as an evil expansionist, a fascination with a character who started a civil war lasting four million years has led later writers to change Megatron somewhat. These days, he's much more like Magneto in the X-Men comics; a charismatic warrior who draws people to him and puts those people above all else. This not only puts him in conflict with other species and the Autobots who protect them, but regularly leaves him as the last one standing in Cybertron's defence when all else have fled.

One of Megatron's most recent portrayals saw him as a miner speaking to the masses and inspiring revolution through his writings. It's only when an increasingly authoritarian police force brutalises him that he begins to turn villainous.

Just as with the Autobots, every Decepticon will have their own reason for joining up and they're not all going to be purely villainous. Exploring this on both sides, showing the villainous heroes and the heroic villains, can only be a good thing for the show.

After hearing that you are what you eat, Mik took a good hard look at his diet and realised he might just be a szechuan spare rib alongside prawn fried rice.
