10 Times Doctor Who Became The Weirdest Drama On TV
5. Vengeance On Varos
The weirdness continued in the Sixth Doctor's torture-fuelled romp Vengeance On Varos. Playing like a cross between The Muppets and Hostel, the narrative took Baker's bombastic incarnation into the deadly Punishment Dome and its murky dealings, overseen by reptillian wheeler dealer Sil. Hallucinations such as giant flies punctuated the crazed chase sequences, and arch scientist Quillam became the latest deformed genius (after Sharaz Jek and the soon to be seen Borad) to cross swords with the garrulous Gallifreyan. His genetic experiments led to a lunatic scene in which Peri and freedom fighter Areta were transformed into a bird and lizard for no other reason than to creep out the kiddiwinks. The standout encounter was a shorter one, and involved arguably the show's strangest ever threat - two marauding pensioners in nappies, whose rabid grunts got cut short when they were stung to death by the Dome's lethal plantlife. Quite how this pair ended up in such an undignified state is never explained... probably for the best!
