What a surprise Colin Baker's debut story must have been for viewers still reeling from the tautly-plotted gun-fest of The Caves Of Androzani. Doctor Who didn't so much make an unexpected detour as smash through its neighbour's fence in a four-parter touched by madness throughout. Perhaps it was appropriate, given the Doctor's volatile regeneration, that The Twin Dilemma wound up a patchwork quilt of a tale, as varied as the colours on his notorious coat! When the Time Lord wasn't trying to kill companion Peri or shop her to the birdmen in tunics - who, as it turned out, worked for malevolent slugs - he attempted to babysit two maths prodigies, who were twins with speech impediments. The most noteworthy aspect of the drippy drama was Pirates Of The Caribbean star Kevin R McNally, in an early role as young star copper Hugo Lang, last seen helping the citizens of Jaconda mop up the slime in the aftermath of glutinous baddie Mestor's reign of terror.
