6. Harry Potter
The diminutive wizard has already shaped the reading habits of a generation and spawned one of the most successful film franchises in history so it's no small wonder that the Chosen One has also made an impact on Doctor Who, especially in the tendency of the Doctor in NuWho to wave his sonic screwdriver around like a magic wand (Moffat pretty much acknowledges the link when he has Matt Smith dress as a wizard in The Time of the Doctor). By the end of the Smith era, the sonic may as well be a magic wand as it could seem to do mostly anything. The whole of Matt Smith's tenure has a magical feel which could well be influenced by the success of Pottermania. In their central dynamic, the team of the Doctor, Amy and Rory roughly correspond to grown up versions of Harry, Hermoine and Ron, Amy eventually getting over her infatuation with the Doctor to settle with the more down to Earth Rory.
