10 Times Netflix Caused Major Viral Trends
7. Emily In Paris - The Mostly Forgotten Feud Between America And France
Anyone remember that one meme of Donald Glover, hands full of pizza, walking unassumingly into a room full of fire? Well, that’s what it was like for us Brits when we went online to see the tyranny of negative reviews come in from French media about an innocent little show called Emily in Paris.
I’m pretty sure when Darren Star, of Sex and the City fame, came up with the idea of a bubbly, exuberant American Girl in Paris, he didn’t predict the drama that would come from it.
We all knew of the historic feud between the French and the Americans, but it was Netflix that bought it back to the forefront of everybody’s minds when they decided to produce a show full of outdated stereotypes about the French. The show describes French people as “lazy” and “smelly”; the men are pushy and sleezy, and Emily? Well, she is the saint sent there to make them better, more hard-working people.
Needless to say, it was a little out of touch. So, my suggestion to Darren Star: stick to the cities you know. And to Netflix: not all press is good press.
