10 Times Star Trek Reused Footage And Hoped You Wouldn't Notice

7. Launching The Defiant - The Search Part 1/The Die Is Cast

The USS Defiant is a beautiful ship, making its debut in the third season opener, The Search Pt 1. It was unlike anything that Star Trek had ever offered before, while also going against Gene Roddenberry's belief that Starfleet would never have a warship. The Defiant was designed to fight the Borg, with its profile reduced and its weapons and engines dialled up to eleven. In this first appearance, the audience are treated to an extended shot of it pulling away from the station, reversing, turning, and heading toward the wormhole.

Later in the season, this highly distinct scene is reused. In The Die Is Cast, Sisko takes the ship into the Gamma Quadrant to rescue Odo and Garak. The exact same launch sequence is used.

This isn't simply a case of using some stock footage to show the Defiant traveling, which often happened in the series. This was a beauty shot to introduce the vessel, giving the audience a quick version of the Enterprise-in-drydock scene from the Motion Picture. The two episodes are also relatively close together, or at least, they are both in the same season. The intro shot in The Search was still fresh in the audiences' minds, something which also plays victim to the age of streaming and binging.
