10 TV Friendships That Wouldn't Work In Real Life

2. Blair Waldorf And Serena Van Der Woodsen (Gossip Girl)

To anyone watching this show about way too privileged teenagers who don't know what to do with their money, it's hard to believe that any of the friendships prevail the show's run considering the many strains that happen throughout the seasons. The friendship between the main girls, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen, is a prime example.

Ever since the pilot, it's clear that Blair's boyfriend and first love Nate Archibald has feelings for Serena and it's revealed they actually slept together, understandably driving a wedge between the girls. The show abandons the book's idea of this love triangle pretty early on, but even this is referenced quite a lot for the rest of the series, showing how it left a mark on their friendship. One could say Blair had her payback when she started dating Dan Humphrey, Serena's true love (as she herself claims). Was it the post-prince-marriage craziness, hidden resentment for her BFF or genuine feelings for the guy? One can only guess but it didn't exactly help the friendship.

There's also a well established dynamic between the girls, with Serena being the carefree charismatic party girl who glides through everything, and Blair being the rigid ice queen who lacks the natural charm and has to resort to scheming to get her way. This causes the girls to fight at least once per season as Blair can't seem to get out of her best friend's shadow and Serena is either unaware of the effect she has on her or just sick of holding herself back for her sake. All of this just screams unhealthy and unequal friendship which only manages to work in the show because if Dan Humphrey can be Gossip Girl, anything else seems possible.
