It's fair to say that Lost wasted no time setting up literally innumerable mysteries which fans fixated on and agonised over the course of its six-season run.

But the primary mystery related to the actual nature of the island's existence and the forces contained within it.

Mid-way through season six, Jacob (Mark Pellegrino) explained that the island is like a cork, preventing darkness and malevolent forces from escaping and annihilating the world.

Though Jacob's remark seemed to be metaphorical in nature, the series finale revealed that, in fact, the Heart of the Island was a literal giant stone cork holding the evil at bay, as is unplugged by Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) and later restored by Jack (Matthew Fox).

It was just too silly a revelation to be worth six years of buildup, and in conjunction with the finale's other underwhelming revelations, ensured Lost's climactic episode remains one of the most divisive in TV history.
