4. What Happened To Those Praying Mantis Eggs? - Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy The Vampire Slayer was, generally speaking, a pretty groundbreaking show. And though a lot of people will argue that it never beat its own glorious second and third seasons, it remains an early example of how sci-fi/horror could work in a serialised format on TV.

That said, the show's first season is a fairly mediocre affair, and one that followed the now somewhat dated "story of the week" format. And one first season episode saw Buffy's goofy sidekick Xander falling for a hot new teacher who, um, turned out to be a giant praying mantis. Yep: after the teacher reveals her true identity, she tries to eat Xander, though Buffy arrives just in time to save her pal (before he loses his virginity to an insect woman, thankfully) and does away with the bad guy.

But the episode's final moments dwindle menacingly on a shot of several unhatched praying mantis eggs in Sunnydale High's basement. Sure, this was probably just supposed to be a funny ending, but c'mon, those things are going to hatch, and then what? A kooky spin-off series, we'd hoped.
