Why It Might Be Cancelled

The CW has already renewed most of its shows, which leaves The Originals in a perilous position. Its showrunner has already announced his departure, which isn't exactly a show of confidence, and the series is a long way off the likes of the Arrowverse shows in terms of the 18-49 demo.

Why It Might Not

With The Vampire Diaries ending, getting rid of The Originals would mean The CW doing away with the entire universe, and recognisable franchises with built-in fan-bases are a strong commodity. While The CW does need to make some room on its slate for series like Black Lightning (yep, another superhero series), other dramas on the network are doing slightly worse: iZombie, Frequency, and No Tomorrow are all at risk too (though it's maybe more of a given for the latter two). It's probably a case of vampires vs zombies here - the former has a slight edge with ratings, the latter with critics.
