2. A Nibbling Suspicion - Futurama

For a show that was seemingly about a group of weirdos flying through space delivering parcels, Futurama had some stellar writing.

Matt Groening's second child (after he got bored with his first yellow one) premiered in 1999 in iconic fashion. Pizza delivery boy and all-round loser Phillip J. Fry "accidentally" falls into a cryogenic freezer, waking up 1000 years later on the eve of the 31st century.

As revealed in the fourth season episode The Why of Fry, Leela's beloved pet Nibbler travelled back in time to make sure that the orange-haired dolt fell into the freezer.

This is because Nibbler is actually a highly intelligent alien tasked with defeating the evil Brainspawn. Fry is the only one immune to their powers, so Nibbler did what he had to do to bring him into the future.

The seeds for this reveal were sown right in the show's first few minutes. When Fry originally falls into the pod, a shadow is seen very briefly under his desk.

The outline is very familiar to Futurama fans as that of their favourite three-eyed, dark matter-pooping alien pet.
