Issa Rae's HBO series Insecure, which deals with the contemporary African-American experience, will come to an end after its fifth season. The show has received acclaim since its debut in 2016, with Rae's performance receiving both Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Leading Actress.

The announcement via Deadline from Rae confirms that the show, which she co-produces with Prentice Penny, was originally planned for a five-season run.

Prentice and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end. We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience.

The show was developed as an adaptation of Awkward Black Girl, Issa Rae's online series. She worked on Insecure with Larry Wilmore to extend it into long-form and as of February 2021, the show holds a rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. With the confirmation of it ending, the show is going out on a high. There is currently no premiere date for the fifth season, which is due to air in 2021.
