High Maintenance began life as a freeform series on Vimeo, with episodes ranging from five to twenty minutes in length. The site provided funding for six episodes before it was picked up by HBO, which produced the show through to the end of its fourth season. They have now confirmed that it will not be returning for a fifth.

Ben Sinclair stars as The Guy, a cannabis dealer who meets a variety of characters throughout the show. The stories tend to focus on how their lives intersect with his, with critics noting the positive portrayals of everyday life in Brooklyn and Manhattan. High Maintenance features depictions of normal daily lives for Jewish communities, with Sinclair himself being Jewish.

It's first season featured the episodes Meth(od) and Grandpa, which both featured highly in many end of year lists. The second season episode Globo was ranked by Time and Variety as one of the best episodes of television in 2018.

The decision to end the show came from co-creators Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld, both of whom have publicly talked about the time being right for them to move on to new projects.
