10 TV Shows That Most Accurately Represent Britain

1. The Trip

Peep Show Mark
BBC Worldwide

Certainly one of the less well known shows on this list. The Trip features British comedy royalty in the form of Rob Brydon (not his only mention on this list) and Steve Coogan, who portray fictionalised and accentuated versions of themselves. The premise centres on the fictionalised Coogan agreeing to undertake a restaurant tour of the north of England to impress his fictional girlfriend. However, she subsequently suggests the two take a break from their relationship prompting Coogan to invite fellow comedian and actor Rob Brydon.

What ensues is a loose plot that navigates some of the most beautiful and underrepresented areas of the north of England, whilst allowing the two comedic heavyweights to improvise and riff off one another in fine dining restaurants.

What is particularly British about The Trip, is not only the beautiful scenery that the pair often look out on from their Michelin star surroundings, but also the uncomfortableness that punctuates the high calibre impressions, gags and anecdotes.

The series has spawned a film and three European follow ups, but the highly rated first series gives a good insight into British food, scenery and the unease and subtle humour that often accompanies British conversations. A very British Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives
