10 TV Shows That Ruined Other TV Shows

7. The Haunting Of Hill House RUINED American Horror Story

The Last of Us Walking Dead
Netflix & FX

Not dissimilar to the Expanse-Trek comparison, Mike Flanagan's debut Netflix horror series The Haunting of Hill House proved that small-screen horror didn't need to be appointment trash TV propelled forward by shock value - it could be as emotionally involving as any "prestige" drama series.

Almost immediately after The Haunting of Hill House premiered, it received favourable comparisons to FX's horror series American Horror Story, especially its first season, Murder House, to which it bares a number of not-superficial similarities.

And while American Horror Story's debut season absolutely ranks among its best, it's basically left dead in a ditch in light of Flanagan's more nuanced, artful riff on similar material - that is, exploring familial discord and trauma amid a haunted house scenario.

Stood next to The Haunting of Hill House, American Horror Story, even in its best moments, is basically a fun rollercoaster ride.

It's high-calorie, dumb fun, but once Flanagan showed us all what televisual horror could be, that just didn't seem good enough anymore.
