10 TV Shows With Massive Budgets That Failed
8. The Get Down
A highly ambitious project from Netflix and Baz Luhrmann, The Get Down quickly imploded on itself.
Set in the 1970s Bronx R'n'B and disco scene, the show looked and sounded amazing, but beyond that, it had very little to offer.
Luhrmann spent over a decade developing the concept for the series and even managed to bring in key historical figures to act as advisors and executive producers on the show. These included Nas, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Kool Herc, and others. That kind of attention to detail, along with an inspired and youthful cast made The Get Down feel very authentic on the surface, but the writing often felt shallow and even cartoonish.
Ultimately, the exorbitant cost of production was the show's undoing. Reported budget estimations range from $180 to $200 million, which is on par with any Marvel movie, and the viewing figures simply weren't high enough to justify such investment. In 2017, Netflix announced that The Get Down will end after just 11 episodes.
