10 Underrated Horror TV Shows From The '90s You Totally Forgot About

1. Tales From The Crypt

Tales from the Crypt isn't always considered one of the "best" horror shows, with critics rolling their eyes at the host. Still, discrediting the series for the campy nature of The Cryptkeeper is undoubtedly doing it a disjustice.

Tales from the Crypt had a rich history dating back to the 1950s, a tale of how one particular bi-monthly comic book outlasted and outperformed its counterparts, The Haunt of Fear and The Vault of Horror. These tales inspired authors such as R.L. Stine and eventually interested executives at a little cable company known as HBO.

From there, Tales from the Crypt was a tremendous success, running seven seasons from 1989-1995. The show was popular enough it helped HBO launch its slogan, "It's not TV. It's HBO." Additionally, the series garnered the attention of many big names in show business, such as Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, and saw guest appearances from stars like Tim Curry and Brad Pitt.

A PG cartoon variation of the show quickly appeared, and soon did the plethora of merchandise and home videos. Perhaps it was the rising mainstream recognition that caught the ire of some long-term fans, but even beyond commercial success, Tales from the Crypt still deserved a tip of the hat for building a massive anthology of 93 horror stories. As for the Cryptkeeper, he was definitely the show's mascot, but all things considered, he had little impact on the stories and was just the creepy bow that tied everything together.
