10 Unpleasant Facts About The Making Of Buffy The Vampire Slayer

8. Jess Whedon Made The Sex Sounds For Buffy And Angel’s Love Scene

Midway through Season 2, Buffy has sex with Angel, causing him to experience a moment of true happiness and lose his soul. Technically, this scene takes place in ‘Surprise’, but the audience witnesses the couple’s night of passion in the following episode through the lens of a flashback-dream sequence.

This encounter also happened to be the first sex scene writer-director Joss Whedon ever had to shoot. Though Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz were cool with it, Whedon found the whole thing rather embarrassing.

In fact, he was so embarrassed that he couldn’t bring himself to ask Gellar and Boreanaz to do the sound effects. Left with no other choice, Whedon had to record the heavy breathing himself with the help of the sound editor, Cindy Rabideau.

So, next time you watch this scene, just try not to think about the fact you’re actually listening to the director and the sound editor.
