10 Upcoming TV Shows That Won't Be An Easy Watch
9. The Peripheral
Nothing sets expectations quite like a trailer that boasts, "From the mind-bending creators of Westworld."
Indeed, Amazon's upcoming adaptation of William Gibson's 2014 sci-fi novel The Peripheral has been developed by Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, and so it's reasonable to expect another heady mystery box story that's far from relaxing, undemanding Friday night viewing.
Given that both press and general reader reviews for the novel have called it a complex, challenging work that doesn't hold the reader's hand, this is certainly going to be a show you'll want to watch with a laser-focused mind: not while scrolling on your phone after a tough day at the office.
The marketing has done a terrific job of selling it as both slickly compelling and enticingly enigmatic, though hopefully Joy and Nolan won't leave viewers frustrated with excessively opaque, slow-bled storytelling - as has often been a critique of Westworld.
The Peripheral premieres on Amazon Prime Video on October 21.
