The Master is returning! And Captain Jack as well! And a future Doctor too! And who is that mysterious looking person who we only get one shot of as ominous music plays in the background? The hype builds to excessive levels as everyone jumps on board for the start of what promises to be an incredible season!

Of course this is not what happened, and audiences were left in the dark for most of these big moments. While having minimal details of the many big reveals from Season 12 did make the shocks hit home even harder, unfortunately many Whovians had already given up on the show and missed them all.

There is always a fine line between hyping your product through revealing advertising and trailers and not giving too much away, a balance Doctor Who has not always got right. But can you imagine the added excitement if some of these big reveals were at least hinted beforehand? In particular, the return of Captain Jack could have been a huge selling point, a fan fav from the show's peak viewing period that many lost viewers would have returned to see.
