10 Vikings Fates Worse Than Death

4. Life As A Viking Slave

This one should be rather self-explanatory.

The life of a slave is one fraught with misery, pain and gruelling amounts of work. It's a barbaric practice that has destroyed the lives of millions, and while it's easy to love the Vikings in this series, it's tough to overlook this part of their culture.

Viewers saw plenty of slaves throughout the show, but for the most part, they were characters who were taken from the torment of slavery and brought into a (somewhat) more peaceful life; examples include, Phorrun, Yidu and Margrethe. However, looking at those who weren't so lucky gave you a horrifying picture.

As a Viking slave, you would be worked down to the bone and treated like scum. As the plaything of whoever "owned" you, you'd be subject to their will and could suffer an endless barrage of injustices, with no one by your side to help you.

Then, of course, if you ever tried to escape, you'd find yourself in even more pain and torment. It's no wonder so many Viking slaves strived to take their own lives rather than live in bondage.
