10 Worst Doctor Who Episodes According To YOU

2. In The Forest Of The Night

Doctor Who In The Forest Of The Night
BBC

Even unpopular stories from Series 8 (like Robot of Sherwood), have had a bit of a renaissance in recent years, but one thing's for sure: In the Forest of the Night is still terrible, and no amount of Capaldi withdrawal will fix that.

The Doctor intrudes on a school trip after the kids come under threat from a load of trees. Not sentient warrior trees, or poison trees, or anything of the like – just bog-standard, run of the mill trees. Careful though: there’s a lot of them, and they’re making public transport an absolute nightmare.

This episode attempts to focus on the character drama, with minimal action throughout. This is no issue whatsoever if the drama is meaty, but here the emotional beats are basically retreading the plot of The Caretaker a few weeks prior, except this time, there’s a bunch of precocious children and a lame monster of the week sprinkled on top.

The Doctor also endorses a child rejecting their mental health medication and encourages her to tap into the voices in her head. Regardless of whether this actually saved the day, it's a terrible message for a family show.

It's just a bit bland overall isn't it, and you can see why fans would consider this the bottom of the barrel of Twelfth Doctor stories.
