10 Worst TV Villains Of The Last 10 Years
7. Andy Bernard - The Office
While The Office (U.S) managed to retain an impressive level of quality for nine seasons, there’s no denying that the quality dipped after the exit of Steve Carell, and a significant factor in the decline is the show’s increasingly bizarre use of Andy Bernard.
The character emerged as another foil for Jim, but slowly became a more sympathetic character, ascending to quasi-lead circa season eight. As the de facto hero, Andy rises to manager, falls, then triumphantly rises again.
Then, he makes a dramatic heel turn. In season nine, Andy reverts to his old, unpleasant self, exacerbated by power and the cartoonish quality of the show’s latter years. He’s spiteful to Nellie (understandable as she attempted to pinch his job, though he takes it too far), and gross in his treatment of ex-girlfriend Erin, whose new relationship he attempts to ruin in a manner that would be actionable by HR.
By no means does this make for fun viewing in a fluffy workplace sitcom. Helms dials it up to the max and makes the character genuinely loathsome in a way Michael Scott never was. It’s a strange choice all round.
