3. Futurama
All ten seasons of Matt Groenings animated sci-fi sit-com are available to US Netflix customers, including the feature-length episodes from 2008. The show follows the adventures of Philip J. Fry, a late 20th century pizza delivery boy who accidentally cryogenically freezes himself on New Years Eve. After waking up from a thousand year sleep to find himself in a retro-futuristic version of the 31st century, he manages to find himself a job working for Planet Express, an interplanetary delivery company. Fox had been putting pressure on The Simpsons creator to come up with a new show all throughout the 1990s, and this lead Groening to begin work on Futurama. Enlisting the help of David X. Cohen, who was at the both writing and producing The Simpsons, to assist him with the shows development, and the pair began coming up with numerous characters and possible storylines. Despite the creative juices flowing right from the get-go, Groening has described the experience of trying to get Futurama on the air as by far the worst experience of his grown-up life. His efforts were not in vain, however, and while it never really stood much chance of standing up to The Simpsons, it has clocked up just short of 20 awards and has even spawned a spin-off comic book.
