2. A Female Doctor
The topic of female Doctors has already been brought up on this list but you must've known that it would make another appearance. Of all the rumours that surround the Doctor's ongoing adventures, this one is by far the most prominent. It's apparently the most persistent, too, as it returned to the surface once again in 2012 (on 2nd April - perhaps publishing it a day earlier would have been more appropriate?) when the Daily Express suggested that the 50th anniversary special would end with the mother of all cliffhangers when the titular Time Lord regenerated into a woman. But it didn't end there. The red top had also been given a secret tip off (one that they evidently felt the need to share) from that ever formidable 'show insider' that Sherlock actress Lara Pulver was "a real contender" to take on the coveted role. Suffice to say, it never happened, though what an almighty cliffhanger it would have been.
