11 Famous Faces You Never Knew Were Doctor Who Fans
8. Stephen Fry
As a British institution himself, Stephen Fry's admiration for the Doctor is hardly surprising. He was even going to write his own episode of the series back in 2006 but the realisation of his ambitious script, which was allegedly set in the 1920s, would have ultimately proven to be too expensive for the show's limited budget to handle. He didn't have time to adjust it accordingly either, what with his juggling commitments to the worlds of TV, film, literature and all his general activism in between. He's a busy man, you know? His inclusion on this list could be somewhat outdated now, though. He caused controversy (which, let's face it, doesn't exactly take all that much) in the aftermath of Matt Smith's debut series in 2010 by suggesting that Doctor Who had become a children's programme which no longer warranted the amount of attention the BBC gave it. To say this caused an uproar would be an understatement and it even reached the throne desk of showrunner Steven Moffat who was quick to respond in its defence as he affirmed "it was specifically designed to be a family programme". So there you go. Stephen did say it's a "wonderfully written" children's show, though, but it's now unlikely that fans will ever get to see whether Moffat's scripts are as wonderfully written as Fry's ultimately binned one would've been. What's more, his proposed Series 2 script was replaced by Fear Her, so that's a reason in itself to be resentful. True story.
