12 Things Agents Of SHIELD Needs To Fix For Season 2
10. Less Treading Water With Mysteries
Did anybody really need to wait almost ten episodes to find out that Melinda May's origin involved her having to make some tough decisions and going through a rough time in combat? How about the secret identities of Skye's parents, who've been whispered about for almost the entire season, or Coulson's agonisingly stretched-out remembrance of his miraculous resurrection? Now, not all of these are necessarily bad storylines or unimportant to the characters in question (the latter two are crucial to Skye and Coulson's identities, in fact), but when you tease something for months at a time the reveal's bound to be a little disappointing if it's not a jaw-dropping paradigm shift for them. ABC should have learned this lesson long ago on Lost: delayed gratification rarely works unless you've got an ace up your sleeve, and most invested audiences would rather have character development occur gradually so they can grow with the leads rather than waiting for sudden alterations to happen that 'change everything'. We shouldn't be given the promise that the characters will be made more interesting in the future; they should just be as interesting as they can be right now.
