13 Horrible Life Lessons My Little Pony Tries To Teach Our Kids
3. Celestial Advice
The Horrible Life Lesson: If a decision feels hard, just weasel out at the first opportunity - even if it means not doing what's best for somepony you care about.
In seventh season opener Celestial Advice, Twilight Sparkle realizes (after some badgering by Discord) that Starlight Glimmer is ready for the next stage of her friendship lessons. Just as Princess Celestia once did for her, Twilight must send her student away and allow her the freedom to learn on her own. This causes Twilight a great deal of sadness, but she ultimately sucks it up and does the right thing...
...for about three seconds. As soon as Starlight shows the slightest hesitation to leave Ponyville, Twilight pulls the plug on the whole thing.
Moving on and learning new things can be hard. If her own mentor had listened when Twilight expressed trepidation at the idea of leaving Canterlot in search of new friends, she never would have become a princess. Celestia had to let Twilight spread her (previously) metaphorical wings and explore new horizons.
Twilight knows that it's time for Starlight to do the same. By denying her student the opportunity to grow, she isn't just feeding Starlight's fears - she's selfishly catering to her own. Celestia thoroughly explains this, but apparently, there are some lessons that faithful student Twilight just isn't willing to learn.
