It's hard to imagine what 13 Reasons Why would have been without Alex Standall. One of the most reserved - and yet intriguing - characters in the first season, he would go on to become one of its few silver linings in its less-than-stellar days.

Alex's attempted suicide was the single cliffhanger that meant the show had to return for a second offering, and as we spent that year wondering if he'd survive, we eventually found out that he did. And from there, he had to embark on a long journey towards recovery.

While the character's physical recovery was understandably strenuous, it was his emotional recovery that was hardest for him as it took him a long time to see himself as anything but 'broken'. But not only did he do that, he found a way to let go of most of the hurt, the guilt and everything about who he was so that he could move on and finally find some semblance on happiness.

Alex has been through so much during his 13 Reasons Why journey, but he found a way to get through it. One of the show's most troubled characters, he developed a great deal over the four seasons and, in the end, his journey towards self-acceptance - which culminated in the realisation that he was gay - and his subsequent relationship with Charlie St. George was one of the show's best arcs. And no matter what was thrown at him, Miles Heizer handled it like a champ, turning in some of the best performances in recent TV history.
