13 Reasons Why Review: 10 Ups & 9 Downs From ALL 4 Seasons
2. Justin's Death Was Unnecessary
There are multiple characters on 13 Reasons Who who could legitimately hold the title of 'fan-favourite', but one person who worked damn hard to earn his spot on that list is Justin Foley.
A character with a smile that would melt the coldest of hearts, we soon found out that he was one of the show's most deeply flawed individuals, and his struggles with addiction - and his lack of self-worth - ruled his life, along with his undying loyalty to Bryce Walker.
Justin spent the majority of the show's 49 episodes attempting to pull himself out of the negativity surrounding his life, cutting ties with Bryce, overcoming his addiction and vowing to make amends for the mistakes he once made. And, in spite of those many flaws, fans took to him and championed him because it was clear that underneath everything, he was a genuinely good person.
After allowing him to find the peace he needed to at the beginning of Season 4, the decision to then turn around and kill him in the final episode felt incredibly misguided. Yes, it's admirable that the show wanted to start conversations about HIV and AIDS, but the narrative barely went into that because, as soon as we found out what was happening to him, it was over.
Justin fought tooth and nail to redeem himself and better his life, so to kill him off when the finish line was in sight just because we couldn't have another season without another death was just so deeply disappointing. This didn't need to happen at all, and quite frankly, Justin deserved better.
