13 Reasons Why Season 2 Review: 5 Ups And 7 Downs
6. Olivia And Andy Baker's Relationship
Hannah's parents, Olivia and Andy, have always had a wonderful relationship. They were childhood sweethearts, and Hannah told us in Season 1 that she was envious of this, hoping that she could one day fall in love like her mother did. The flashback scenes to the weeks leading up to Hannah's death showed Olivia and Andy fighting over money problems, but there were no signs that their marriage was on the rocks, which is what made the separation storyline in Season 2 hard to buy into.
Considering such a short period of time has passed in between the two seasons, it was hard to believe that Andy had begun a relationship with another woman — a woman that he's now living with too. But the worst part is that, according to Season 2, Andy was having an affair with this woman before Hannah died, and Hannah was aware of it. Yeah, that's just not plausible.
The new material doesn't gel with the first season. it's completely unbelievable that Andy would've cheated on his wife and it's even more unbelievable that Hannah knew about the affair and never mentioned it before. If she did know, she would've surely talked about it on one of her tapes. The whole affair storyline is contrived, and does little for the narrative other than messing up everything we were told in Season 1.
