13 Things Non-Fans Always Get Wrong About Doctor Who

4. 'Tardis' Is A Proper Noun

Wrong! It's actually an acronym. So it's T A R D I S. "Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space" - that's what TARDIS stands for. Or "Time And Relative Dimensions In Space" €“ depends which character you look to for the definitive explanation. Either way it's a chain of words that's supposed to represent the fact that the ship exists in two different dimensions within the same space (the whole bigger on the inside thing). Oh and I guess it's also a reference to the somewhat significant fact that it can travel through time and space. So TARDIS isn't a brand or a model name, like Astra or Corvette or Fiesta: Rossiter: Which way? Addams: This way. Doctor 10: No, no, no, no, no. The other way. I've got my Fiesta. Kate: Doctor, hello. We found the Astra in a field. I'm having it brought in. Doctor 4: Well, it's a sort of communications device reserved for wild catastrophes and sudden calls to man the battle stations. Adric: But the Corvette doesn't have battle stations. No, TARDIS is most definitely an accepted name derived of an acronym. When it's written it must be all upper-case letters, just like every good acronym should be. There are no dashes. There are no full stops. It's just the six letters, side by side, all in a row. TARDIS. Not Tardis.

I'm just a guy who loves words. I discover vast tracts of uncharted enjoyment by chucking words together and coming up with stuff that talks about the things I enjoy and love most. I'm also a massive listaholic, so I'm probably talking about a list, looking at a list or banging away at another What Culture list as you read this. My tone's pretty relaxed and conversational, with a liberal sprinkling of sparkling wit, wilting sarcasm and occasional faux-condescension - with tongue almost always firmly planted in cheek.
