Throughout the entirety of the seven series of The West Wing, on several occasions, the nation of "Myanmar" is referred to in conversation by White House staffers and senior members of the Bartlet Administration. Although officially in the nation itself they have referred to themselves as the"Republic of the Union of Myanmar" since 1989, the majority of western governments still use "Burma". The United States is one such nation, with the CIA even writing on their website that America still deems it to be "Burma" and not "Myanmar", due to the fact they do not recognise the legitimacy of the ruling military government or its authority to change the country's name.
