11. Jean Marsh
Best known for playing the loveable maid in Upstairs Downstairs, Marsh has appeared in three substantial roles in the classic series. Firstly she starred as Richard the Lionheart's sister Joanna in the Crusade (with Julian Glover). However, she's best known for her next role, playing companion Sara Kingdom in 12 part epic The Daleks' Masterplan. Very much in the style of Cathy Gale from The Avengers, Sara was a tough space agent who killed her own brother before falling in with the Doctor to fight Mavic Chen (an actor who played two parts - Chen and Tobias Vaughn in The Invasion). Marsh seemed set to be a long term fixture until her surprise demise as she was aged to death in the story's climax. Years later, Marsh made another appearance in the classic era's last series. In Battlefield she played Morgaine, from ancient Arthurian myth. The script is an absolute mess but the show is still a lot of fun, and Marsh is brilliant as a villain who has more shades of grey than was usual back in the original show. She starred with Nicholas Courtney's Brigadier, who had previously played the brother she shot back in the 1960s! Small world.
