9. Jacqueline Hill

As Barbara Wright, Jacqueline Hill was one of the original TARDIS team, giving an effortlessly classy performance for the fist two years of the show. An excellent actress, Hill got some great moments, especially when she tried - and failed - to curb the human sacrifice tendencies of the Aztecs when she was mistaken for their High Priestess. Intelligent, slightly reserved and strangely sexy, Barbara is one of the best companions to date and, with Ian, makes up half of the first Doctor Who romance. She returned to Doctor Who for Meglos. Alas, this was hardly a classic with a script that had Tom Baker playing a space cactus. Barbara played Lexa, High Priest of the Deons, and gave a dignified performance in a script that frankly didn't deserve her.
