Emma Roberts first appeared in the show's third season, Coven, as Madison Montgomery, a spoilt and arrogant movie star who also happened to be a witch. Though generally unlikable for much of the season's run, it became clear - thanks to the sublime writing and Roberts' pitch perfect performance - that she was more than met the eye.

As Madison, Roberts crafted one of Coven's most compelling characters, and was brought back in Freak Show for another full-season stint as complex con artist Maggie Esmerelda.

She later reprised her role as Madison in the messy and ambitious Apocalypse, and played the lead role in the latest season, 1984.

Roberts' ability to play morally questionable and emotionally confused antagonists is remarkable - even by American Horror Story standards - and it's fair to say she's one of the most accomplished mainstays of the series.

She's reportedly not going to make it for season ten, but it wouldn't be too far to assume we'll see her again shortly.
