3. The Great
Starring the consistently underrated Elle Fanning of Maleficent fame and The Favourite's (and every Skins fan's favourite) Nicholas Hoult, Hulu's historical comedy The Great aimed to adapt the ribald, dark humour of that 2019 Oscar winner to the small screen, and the series succeeded admirably.
Okay, so the "historical" part of that earlier genre descriptor may be something of an exaggeration.
But it's no bad thing that the show is willing to throw in the occasional anachronism in order to offer us an updated interpretation of Catherine the Great's rise from an unknown to one of Russia's most famous leaders.
This approach means there's no veil of "well, it was the olden days" to obscure the awful behaviour of the self-absorbed elites as Catherine works her way to power.
Raunchy, irreverent, and unafraid of pushing buttons, this farcical period comedy is a superb satire that belongs on everyone's to-watch list.
