5. It's A Sin
Another in a long line of great British dramas to make this list, It's A Sin is a five-part examination of the 1980s AIDs crisis in London.
The series grapples with the emotional turmoil of the crisis, and how it effected those left behind by the tragedy. Olly Alexander, Omari Douglas and Callum Scott Howells lead the ensemble as three young gay men who move to London, ready to face the next step of their lives, only to be trapped in a world of fear, paranoia and uncertainty.
That write-up may make the drama sound almost too bleak to handle, and whilst it's far from short on emotional gut-punches and heartwrenching bolts from the blue, It's A Sin is also a searing and uplifting tale of love, hope and community spirit in the face of overwhelming odds.
Deeply empathetic and acted to fierce perfection by its large ensemble (which also includes Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Fry and Keeley Hawes), It's A Sin is a guaranteed heartbreaker, but a show that is educational and life-affirming enough to be worth the tears.
