12. X-Men '97

Make no mistake, X-Men '97 may be a continuation of the original X-Men: The Animated Series - which aired for five seasons starting in 1992 - but its similarities to that show are mostly limited to its nostalgic animation and returning voice cast.

Because, whilst this is a direct follow-up to that original show, which ended with the death of Charles Xavier and threw its titular mutants into an altogether deadlier world, it's also much more mature and thematically dense than its predecessor.

Following Cyclops as he attempts to lead the X-Men alongside former foil Magneto, the superhero thriller finds its characters more embattled than ever, the world more untrusting of them than ever before, their inner turmoil more pronounced.

Despite this added focus on more adult themes - from Jean's fractured identity crisis to Magneto's atonement - X-Men '97 is still every bit as fun as what came before, and just as fast-paced, stylish, and violent. It's the best Marvel product produced in years, truth be told, and hopefully this is just the beginning of a prosperous run.
