11. True Detective: Night Country
Before the latest instalment in the madly popular True Detective anthology series, Night Country, Nic Pizzolatto was the driving force of the drama. This year, the reins have been handed to writer/director Issa Lopez, who has worked nothing short of a miracle in bringing the series new life.
Relocating the mystery to the snowy plains of Alaska, Night Country has an entirely fresh tone compared to its predecessors, but the tension and brilliant blending of supernatural threat and procedural murder mystery is as compelling as ever.
Starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives sent to investigate the disappearance of a group of scientists from a remote research station, the drama invests in a tantalising slow burn approach, allowing every new twist of its mystery to linger on the mind and keep you guessing.
As with all True Detective yarns, though, the real power here isn't the meticulous direction or the investigation, but the growth of its central characters, who are forever changed by the secrets they unearth about their victims... and themselves.
