10. Under the Bridge
Starring recent Killers of the Flower Moon breakout Lily Gladstone, Under the Bridge, based on the book by Rebecca Godfrey, is one of the most subversive and meta crime dramas of recent years, taking its by-the-numbers murder mystery and using it to comment on the genre as a whole.
Gladstone is Canadian cop Cam, who's on the case of real-life murder victim Reena Virk (here played by newcomer Vritika Gupta), and if this sounds familiar, rest assured that Gladstone and writer Quinn Shepherd are on-hand to remedy your complaints.
While Under the Bridge is a thrilling crime procedural, it's also so much more, giving voice to Reena through affecting fourth wall breaks, planting Godfrey herself (Riley Keogh) in the investigation, and allowing Cam's Native heritage to play a part in her understanding of Reena's tragic death, and the case at large.
Deeply sombre as it may be, this narrative approach makes for powerful storytelling that's difficult to tear away from, especially when Gladstone is there proving their recent Oscar nomination was very far from a fluke.
