9. We Were The Lucky Ones

Baby Reindeer
Hulu

Based on Georgia Hunter's autobiographical novel of the same name, We Were the Lucky Ones is a stunning tale of family resilience and love in the face of great tragedy.

Following the Polish-Jewish Kurc family (whose members are powerfully brought to life by the likes of Logan Lerman, Joey King, Amit Rahav, and Robin Weigert), the harrowing drama takes place both during and after the Second World War, as its characters attempt to reunite whilst tending to the wounds left to them by the Holocaust.

By no means an easy watch, We Were the Lucky Ones is still a painstakingly vital viewing experience, examining human bravery and family connection without forced sentimentality or emotional manipulation.

Sharply focussed, compassionately performed, and life-affirming, it paints a stunning, heartbreaking portrait of one of humanity's darkest hours, and finds hope amongst the torment. You'll finish it squinting through a stream of tears, but will nonetheless finish hearing the Kurcs' tale with a new appreciation for what you have.
