Around the same time it looked as though the studio sitcom was truly extinct, Quinta Brunson gave audiences the mockumentary-style gem Abbott Elementary and quickly staked her claim as one of our finest TV writers.
The story of a group of teachers working tirelessly to make a difference in an underfunded public school, Abbott Elementary's third season (shortened in length due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes) isn't quite the comedy's best, but it's still far and away the funniest thing currently gracing the small screen.
From the naive but lovable Janine (Brunson) to the dedicated work of a scene-stealing Sheryl Lee Ralph as veteran educator Barbara, Abbott Elementary blends astute social commentary with classic sitcom tropes, from rollicking bottle episodes to amusingly awkward but sweet will-they-won't-they romances.
Recently renewed for season four, Abbott Elementary has already secured its place as one of TV's comedy greats, and the more time we get to spend with the school, the better the world will be. There's few things on TV these days quite so comforting and fun.
