15 Greatest BoJack Horseman Episodes Of All Time

7. Ruthie (Season 4, Episode 9)

BoJack Horseman The Showstopper
Netflix

Whilst BoJack is the undisputed star of the show (what with it being named after him and all), it is the supporting characters that make the series all the more effective.

In Ruthie, Princess Carolyn's distant descendant - the titular Ruthie - tells her class a story about a day in the life of BoJack's loyal agent. In the story, the super-agent/manager attempts to balance her love life with her career, learns some startling truths about those closest to her and has an endlessly bad time. She learns she's had a miscarriage (her fifth), fires her loyal assistant for betraying her trust, and breaks up with her boyfriend.

In the end, it's revealed that Ruthie isn't even real, and that Princess Carolyn imagines her on particularly bad days to help her cope with her troubles. It's a shocking and harsh reveal, built up over an episode of cruel, painfully human twists, and sheds some light on just how strong a woman Princess Carolyn is, despite everything.
